Saving You Money: Energy Efficiency Programs

As you begin identifying possible home projects to improve energy efficiency, increase your comfort and decrease your carbon footprint, you should first look into available financial options and rebates offered by your local utility company. Many states require utilities to offer energy efficiency programs. These programs can range from incentives, free home energy assessments, to rebates for the purchase of energy efficient appliances and equipment.

Another good resource for state, local, utility, and federal incentives is the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Many tax credits have been extended to 2010 or raised from 10 percent to 30 percent. Read more

  • $1,500 tax credit in 2009 and 2010 for qualifying central air conditioners
  • 30 percent tax credit for the cost of qualifying solar panels or solar water heaters through 2016
  • 30 percent tax credit in 2009 and 2010 for qualifying furnaces and boilers
