Our History
Since 1984, Conservation Services Group (CSG) has pioneered promoting energy efficiency, conservation, and clean energy technologies that are helping consumers save money as well as protecting the environment.
Led by Steve Cowell, who co-founded the organization, CSG serves a range of clients from utilities and public agencies to homeowners and local communities where we do business. Our mission is simple – increase energy efficiency throughout the U.S. and invest in clean energy technologies to support environmental protection.
CSG’s philosophy is one of partnership with its clients. The company has received awards from several industry groups including the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, and the Energy and Environmental Building Association. Learn more
In the Beginning
In the 1980s, CSG field staff would walk around neighborhoods, observing New England homes after winter storms. A clean, snow-free roof meant that the residence was not insulated properly. According to Steve Cowell, CSG's CEO and chairman, “nature’s thermal camera” identified which homes needed building shell improvements. Known then as the Community Energy Partnership, the company began an energy audit program for Boston Edison (now NSTAR) in 1984.
Today, CSG conducts nearly a half million home energy assessments annually for utilities and energy efficiency organizations nationwide. We have reached more than 2 million homes in our 28-year history and we aspire to reach millions more as we help build a clean energy economy.
